A conversation with Strawberry Web Developer, Simon Willans
Posted on Tags: Conversation, Web, CSS3, HTML5, BrowsersSo, how’s it going so far? Are there any differences from your old job?
I’m really enjoying working with a larger team and collaborating on projects –whereas in my previous role I would be the sole designer and developer. I’m getting on well with the team and I’m learning more about the software programmes we use.
What attracted you to Strawberry?
There are a variety of reasons! The main reason being the opportunity to work as part of a larger team on some new and exciting projects. Until recently I was living in Scarborough and working at Strawberry gave me the chance to live and work in a bigger city too!
What tools do you use?
As you would expect, I use a variety of tools. For my coding I use Notepad++ and for further development assistance I use various plugins and extensions in either Firefox or Google Chrome. The majority of my design work is carried out in Photoshop, although I do use Illustrator from time to time.
Have there been any big developments in the web design industry over the past year?
The main thing I’m keeping an eye on is the development of HTML5 and CSS3, particularly CSS3 – because it’s making a lot of useful design elements easier to create which ultimately enhances the user experience.
What will be the next big thing?
It will be some time before all of the main browsers fully support CSS3, but when they do it will be pretty awesome!
Have you noticed any trends recently?
I have noticed a lot more designers focusing on graceful degradation for older browsers, instead of making them look exactly the same. In my opinion, modern technology shouldn’t have to suffer to cater for the likes of the older technologies.
Is there a website that has inspired you lately?
Fellow Strawberry colleague Jamie Wright’s website was quite amazing to look at. It just shows some of the power CSS3 has to offer. The colours may be a little extreme, but it still looks funky!
