DESIGN & UX

Magnum Photos represent some of the best known photography talent in the world. For over 70 years they’ve been managing the work of the biggest names in the business, featuring it in physical galleries and in their retail catalogues as limited edition prints, posters and books.

They had a bespoke legacy website with an integrated Magento shop, but this made managing ecommerce restrictive and time-consuming. The customer experience was poor, impacting conversation rates and ultimately costing the business - and their photographers - money.

On-brand, optimised, efficient

Magnum knew they needed to do something differently, and after speaking to a number of Shopify agencies, decided we were the team best suited to help. They asked us to migrate their ecommerce function over to Shopify Plus and create a more on-brand, optimised purchase journey for their customers.

We started by diving into discovery, working with the Magnum team to identify what they needed from their new storefront. They needed the site to be live in time for their annual Square Print Sale, which is a key period for the business. Pressure? What pressure?

Our design team worked with Magnum to develop a new user experience, combining key content and a new creative approach across the store to better reflect their brand and their award-winning photography.

Shopify Markets was used to localise the customer experience, allowing us to set product prices in GBP, USD and EUR, while charging import taxes and duties wherever applicable. They also enabled us to provide accurate shipping rates, ensuring correct carrier chargers were applied at checkout based on where the product is coming from and heading to.

The existing site structure made SEO complicated: it involved a two-step process where the store was redirected from a subfolder of the main site, to a new subdomain on the separate store site at server level, before being passed through Shopify. This method ensured a smooth (and fast) experience for the visitor.

On top of this, a technical SEO checklist was completed during the build to identify any gaps and ensure Magnum remained competitive on their new platform.

Partnering with Strawberry to migrate our site to Shopify Plus has helped move our business forward. The new platform offers a faster, more user-friendly experience, with a vastly streamlined checkout process helping improve our conversion rates. Strawberry’s honest advice and professional approach ensured our migration was complete before our annual Square Print Sale, ensuring its success. We’re thrilled with the results.

“It’s so easy to use!”

Feedback has been glowing from all angles. Customers have commented that it’s really easy to use, with products being easy to find and purchase. The checkout time is also significantly quicker thanks to the one page checkout experience, and options such as Shop Pay and Apple Pay. Magnum themselves have told us how easy Shopify admin has been, and how much more straightforward it is for them to update the site’s content.

Our client told us “Having the site live before the sale was so important for us, and it seemed to make a big difference to the customer experience. It massively reduced our customer service enquiries during the sale week, and we saw a huge increase in mobile purchases versus previous sales.”
