When should you consider a replatforming?

Have you started considering re-platforming but are struggling to decide if it is necessary just yet?

We understand it is not something to be taken lightly. It can be costly and time-consuming, and whilst we’re happy to discuss the opportunities and benefits of re-platforming, are there any metrics or things to look out for that help determine when you should make the leap?

These are some of the more common things to consider when deciding what to do next.

Current costs against revenue

Do you know what your technology costs against sales as a percentage? Whilst not a guarantee, the cost of a SaaS platform is commonly much cheaper as a percentage of revenue. Especially when compared to the legacy technology stacks we typically see in use.

It doesn’t take long to calculate it. What does it tell you?

Are you investing in a platform that is driving you crazy?

We’re willing to bet you can spend less and have either Shopify or BigCommerce, either of which will likely be a much more agile platform than your current one.

That sounds like a good idea, right?

SaaS is cheaper than upgrading what you have

The upgrade costs of the current platform are another common reason we hear for moving to a new platform entirely.

We regularly hear that upgrading to the latest version of your current platform (very often Magento) is often more costly than moving to a SaaS platform. Moving is often cheaper, and you unlock the benefits of the new platform. Win-win!

Spend — Maintenance versus Feature?

Many retailers are frustrated that they have to use more of their technology budget to keep their current platform from falling apart than they do spending on making improvements that actively drive growth.

They are keeping the lights on rather than making them brighter. This problem goes away with Shopify and BigCommerce due to the very nature of the platforms. No more hosting, no more version upgrades, and no more painful upgrades that seem to only benefit the agency selling them.

The big one: lack of agility

The most common complaint.

Your legacy platform takes more money and time to keep up with your competitors and customer expectations.

SaaS platforms move quickly. With regular updates and the benefit of them being available to you immediately, SaaS moves faster than most, if not all, legacy platforms. And it does so whilst delivering that benefit at a lower cost.

Are these the only reasons?

No. Too slow to keep up with the market, inefficient spending on technology, legacy platforms that are hard to live with or constantly letting the side down are the reasons we hear the most, though.

The leading SaaS solutions empower retailers to build quickly, launch and continue to innovate and grow online retail.
